The Cult of Zyzz

http://trenace.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/zyzz-steroids1.jpg
Zyzz

If you are Australian you may have heard of a young man popularly known as Zyzz (Aziz Sergeyevich Shavershian). Zyzz, who was born in Moscow and moved to Australia with his family at the age of two, developed a cult following on the internet by cleverly marketing his major product: himself. Or more accurately, his body. Through his daily regimen of tough workouts, Zyzz transformed himself from a skinny kid into a 100 kilogram bodybuilder. He also sold protein supplements, was a part-time model, stripper and personal trainer. In his videos (see the video tribute to him, below) he can be seen flexing and strutting around, almost always with his shirt off.

In his videos Zyzz can be seen extolling the virtues of being a ‘sikunt’ (see video to work that out), becoming ‘aesthetic’ and shredded (high muscle definition), and having people ‘mire’ (admire) you. And of course there is the payoff that you can ‘bang bitches’. In one blog post he wrote of walking down the street in Bangkok without a shirt while the Bangkok women were admiring him. At that same time he also wrote of his pride in having increased his muscle mass by ten kilograms in the previous year, going from 90 kg to 100.

Zyzz has a legion of die-hard followers who worship him. If you look at the comments on his YouTube videos, many of his fans speak of him as being a god, or of erecting statues of him, of them sensing him around them as they workout. They encourage each other to get shredded, get aesthetic, be a sikunt, and bang bitches.

For those who dare to comment critically on Zyzz, his followers vent forth with a barrage of Fs and Cs, saying he only encourages people to live a healthy lifestyle and believe in themselves.

The big problem is that Zyzz is now dead. He died in August 2011 of a heart attack in a Bangkok sauna, leaving behind a 100 kilogram aesthetic corpse. He was 22 years old. Apparently, he had a genetic heart condition. He had experienced symptoms in the months before his death, including high blood pressure and shortness of breath, but apparently did not take the problem seriously enough.

I have spoken before of ego falls, the way that life – or the universe – corrects our self-delusions. The more we go into delusion, the greater the ego fall tends to be. In Zyzz’ case the correction was massive and fatal.

There was a big difference between what some fans try to represent him as, and what he actually was. Rather than living a life based on health and fitness as some claim, it appears he was a walking time-bomb. He was a regular user of anabolic steroids. He denied this when confronted in the media, but he can be seen clearly joking about his shriveled testacles in one of his videos, a common side-effect of steroid abuse. Thailand, where he died, is where many bodybuilders go, because steroids are legal and freely available at ten percent of the price of most western countries, where they are illegal.

He also smoked a packet of cigarettes a day, according to some people who knew him.

The cult of Zyzz is a cult of surfaces. It is not the depth of the human being that counts in such a philosophy, but the body, and the power, attention and fame it can bring.

Yet at a deeper level, the consciousness contained in the cult of Zyzz corresponds to a state of psycho-spiritual development. During this phase, the individual can become lost in self-obsession, vanity and narcissism. It has strong correlates with the rebel archetype. When Zyzz extolls his fans that “you are sikunts”, what he is saying is that they are rebels – people who reject the values of society, and choose freedom. Rebellion has a healthy expression, but only when anger at disempowerment, control and alienation is used to break the shackles that society imposes upon us. It can be a call to break out of depression and a sense of hopelessness. But in its unhealthy expression, it can be regressive. The rebel can become anti-social, hateful, self-obsessed. It can perpetuate the alienated ego state. Or become self-destructive. I am not saying Zyzz became all these things. Howevber, these are common characteristics of the problem I'm referring to.

In a sense, the cult of Zyzz reflects that there is something vital missing in our society and education systems. They are devoid of spiritual processes which might allow our youth to find something within themselves that is deeper than body image. The simple teaching of presence – being here now – would greatly alleviate this problem. When a person exists with presence as their default position (as opposed to the the mind and ego), then the shallowness of vanity is easily recognized. How simple it would be to teach presence tools to the young. Yet it is not happening anywhere in public education.

This will sound disrespectful, but Zyzz' death is a gift for the fans who worshipped him, who bought into the delusion. But the gift will only be for those who see through the surface, and acknowledge the lie behind the cult of Zyzz.

Indeed, this is what lies behind all ‘advances’ in spiritual ‘development’: we see a delusion, admit it for what it is, and choose to let it go.

  1. You are just another one of those people who don't understand what Zyzz was all about and what he strove for. I pity you. You stooped so low as to say his death was a gift. He was a human being with friends and family. How dare you say by him dying, we are receiving a gift? We do not worship Zyzz, we see him as a role model. Who the hell wants to be an out of shape bitch when you can strive to look like Zyzz did? He was aesthetic perfection and you will never understand the value of that. You sir are a sad little bitch who probably got picked on all the time when you were growing up.
As a wise man once said "Haters gonna hate."
FUCKING COME AT ME BRO YOU FUCKING SAD CUNT!!

  2. I do apologise if my perspective seems disrespectful. Zyzz' life is as legitimate as anyone else's on the planet. However there is a 'negative' side to it, and some people will take a different perspective from you.

From your perspective, it looks as though I am passing judgment or even condemning Zyzz. In reality I am simply addressing what I sense lies behind the surface. Anytime I write about the ‘shadow’ side of someone or some philosophy, it has the capacity to offend people. On this blog I have written what I call “intuitive profiles” where I looked at certain people in a deep way, including what I sense is their dark side. Some people are going to misunderstand the intention with this approach. My intention is just to bring into awareness the ‘agenda’ or ‘lie’ which lies behind the conscious mind. In bringing the darkness to light, we can be freed from it.

I'll leave your comment up here, as long as you and your friends don't fill the board with hatred. You have as much right to be heard as I do.

As for the gift, even the most terrible thing can be an opportunity for awakening. However I believe it is better to learn through joy, not suffering. And there is suffering in making certain choices.

I know gym culture well, and I know Thailand well. There are dark sides to both, as well as many good things. I still workout. And like Zyzz, I have vanity and ego. They are part of being human. But they can lead to suffering and delusion if you don't develop the right relationship with them - and with the body. And as I suggested, I believe anger is healthy, as long as it is expressed in empowering ways.

    Thanks for sharing your feelings.

    1. Zyzz was a character showing something at an extreme, not a real person. Aziz was just the person behind the character. He was an actor and he stated that himself.

  3. The difference between a douchebag and a sick cunt. A douchebag is oblivious of their negative perception by the greater general public, yet still think they are awesome. A sick cunt, is well aware that people look at them and think "Is this fucking spastic for real?" yet still continue to play up on the image to create endless supply of LOLS. Remember, Nobody likes a tool, everybody loves a sick cunt.

Zyzz was a persona, exclusive from Aziz, the person...if you think he was deluded as you allude to than sorry to say but you've been trolled son.

  4. Zyzz wasn't about health at all, and I don't understand why these armchair commentators keep making the point. He was extremely open about the amount of drugs he took, he didn't sugar coat it. If you read his formspring or old bb.com posts His message wasn't related to health, it was about encouraged lonely, miserable geeks like his old self to start enjoying life. It didn't mean doing 30iu of growth hormone per day, it meant just having more confidence, being proud of achievements, having goals. Irrespective of drugs, bodybuilding is a way to give kids focus and direction, and pride at the results they obtain.

What really irks me though is how the armchair commentators mention drugs as if it is some taboo and they are opening pandora's box. He was an obvious user, he told people what he was using, he warned people not to copy him. Every single athlete competing at the olympics this year will be using hormones, some of them at bodybuilder amounts, yet mainstream society will insist on their worship. My point is that you don't really understand this "cult" at all. You don't understand the thousands of natural bodybuilders who have used fitness as a way to improve their lives, you don't understand how drugs are involved in EVERY sport, how drug use is different to drug abuse, how narcotics or not the same as anabolic hormones. You come across as a lazy mainstream journalist.

    1. You obviously don't understand truly why people are inspired by Zyzz.

First off, Aziz was a different person than Zyzz. Aziz was a kind-hearted guy who never put people down and was never disrespectful to people. As far as Zyzz goes, he inspired a lot of people to go work hard in the gym and improve your physique. But the way he mostly inspired people goes unnoticed by outsiders. He showed people that they can do anything they want to in life and to just ignore what other people thought of you. He showed people to do whatever it takes to be happy. Because there's nothing more important in life than to be happy.
And unfortunately the demographic that Zyzz appeals to were too consumed with what other people thought of them...until Zyzz proved that shouldn't be the case.

Az was an amazing person and in no way did he deserve to pass.

  24. Another who completely misses it, he wasn't teaching anyone to be a rebel. He simply wanted people to start living a more free and fun life rather than being an empty corpse slowly rotting away with a boring depressing life. And as someone previously stated Azyz was open about the roids. With that being said Zyzz's cult is full of lonely, nerdy, fat/skinny losers and you're a horrible "journalist."

  25. Zyzz wasn't the problem, he was just a guy living life how he wanted. The problem is in all the morons who worshiped him, but they are only hurting themselves by being ignorant sheep. Zyzz's ego and possibly related death are no diferent than a fat guy who keeps smoking and overeating and dies as a result. It's all love of self and pleasure at the expense of humility and moderation. No reason to really target Zyzz, these loser kids on the internet and on the misc will find some other heathen to worship, because they have no God and no foundation of proper values.

  26. I'm glad people are expressing their live for Zyzz. Perhaps you are more right than me. I like to think that the way we judge people; or admire them) reflects something about ourselves. So if I have judged Zyzz too harshly, perhaps it is just that I have not fully learned to love myself. In any case, if Zyzz inspires men to lift themselves up, that is a wonderful thing.

BTW, I lost my own brother, who died at 21. So I fully understand Chestbrah's response. Maybe in 20 years or so he might learn to forgive me.

  30. Marcus,

Congrats on crossing the 100,000 hits milestone for your blog. I have no doubts that this blogpost put you over that amount. You apparently struck a nerve, but based on the language the mostly anonymous posters have used, there is a lot of unresolved "anger issues" regarding their idol and his untimely death.

It would be a good thing if these angry, anonymous commenters would read more posts on your blog to understand what you're about. I have found that your impressions of well known people to be "spot on." Zyzz was not known in the U.S., so I had never heard of him until I read your post. America has plenty of shallow celebrities who are worshiped by the masses. I think our superficial, materialistic culture encourages it. What a shame. The people I admire have done things with their lives: Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, Aung San Suu Kyi, Desmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama. They've actually made the world a better place by their presence. What has Zyzz done for the world? I guess he helped decrease the population of the planet by one person.

    1. Also, I dont understand why people look down upon steroid use but worship the same people who use them. Surely you must be liking arnold and his movies, or stallone or any of the young actors and famous models, you would only be a fool if you think they were natural, so why is aziz being hated on and being judged? Because he is yet to make his big screen debut? Aren't the models, actors and the arnolds of today the true enemies to society? Where innocent people are fooled by them and hundreds of products are endorsed by their name? And aziz was fully honest about his usage. The way you talk about his character and persma make him seem evil and bad which is far from true, what do you expect a 22 year old kid who loves life to be like?

Also aziz never competed so there is no reason to even talk about his steroid use, he did it for himself and it is his body and his decision and should be nobody elses buisness

  37. There a sort of area in common between your view Marcus, and some of Zyzz's followers, in so far as there's a certain stage of human development where building the ego is a necessary step towards self-actualization. For instance, the cases of people suffering from mental illness, and those addicted to hard drugs. Perhaps Zyzz's followers are pointing to this when they talk about his inspiration to young people who've badly lost their way in life.

  40. So disrespectful! CUNT!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't think these kids will ever have the sufficient amount of thought to understand the point you are trying to make. But I see exactly where you are coming from. I actually was thinking this while I watched his videos and decided to google it to see what other said about the subject. So I assure you the problem here isn't that you are unliked here, but rather that the majority of these guys probably don't think as deeply as we do.

I find Zyzz to be a great guy and I really do enjoy his character and it is a quite motivating physique. But it can not be neglected that his fame and self obsession did in some way lead to his death. It is important to believe in your self and to stop worrying about what other thought of you. I will not disdain that part of his message. But taking it over board can have it's consequences. Fame isn't always what it seems. It has the power to become a prison and many times it does. But of course that just becomes too deep and we become "sad cunts" for even considering the idea.

Anyway, I do pray and give my heart out to those that didn't just lose "zyzz" but Aziz. I'm sure he was a great guy. Regardless of anything, it can not be denied that he did something amazing. We just hope ya'll are capable of learning not only from his accomplishment, but from his mistake as well.

P.S. The thing I do wholeheartedly disagree on with Zyss is the importance of aesthetics. My philosophy is that we should strive for performance. Strength, speed, and endurance like real athletes do. Real aesthetics are a product of performance. Which lead to real health. Not a just a beautiful body image.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks for the insightful comment! You make some good points, and you are right there is a positive side to Zyzz' philosophy. I do understand where a lot of the anger comes from in these comments, and don't take it personally. Zyzz' brother Chestbra also commented here I recall, and I can fully appreciate how he must feel too - as I lost my younger brother some years ago. The problem with the misunderstanding of what I wrote is that it often takes many years to appreciate the kinds of things that I wrote here, and young guys probably don't have the life experience to "get it". But many will - in time. So I have no judgment of them. Hopefully all of us learned a little from this. Well, I did anyway...

  44. Aziz or “Zyzz” is a rolemodel to all of us striving to be the best we can be. He is an inspiration and has many fans and followers even after his death.. I am one of them. I did not know him personally, but the fact is what he accomplished cannot be taken away from him. People have diffrent views and opinions of him. People make mistakes.. All of us do, he should not be judged by perceptions of his "vanity" and "behaviour" but be seen as a true idol for everyone who is dedicated to something.. I am a proud fan of Zyzz! I'll keep mirin brah!

    ReplyDelete
  45. All these people you here crying and complaining about judgment blah blah. Are all the same that have become a judge themselves. Screw what you think, because said many times before, in the end it really doesn't matter. All your idol worship and vanity has gotten you as far a this idolized shell of an image. You replicate his words "sikunt" "come at me" etc. But you sound just and stupid and bombastic as him. The best you hope to attain is 'mire' or in a better word be fucking jealous at best. You worship him you "love" him only bc you want to be him. But if it were you or him, you'd pick you. You're just as selfish and worthless. Vanity is the deadliest sin, and Aziz felt the fall that pride will bring. Coke, steroids, alcohol.. Haha i don't need an endless blog and 1001 excuses from an insecure teen or undeveloped depraved mind of an idol worshipper to tell me what right and wrong are. I'm alive and healthy, and don't need to be an actor to have that. I don't get the bs hype. The most he ever attained was "troll" and either piss people off or make them want what he had.. And at that wasn't even close to the best, Especially for using roids. King of aesthetics..hahaha any given bodybuilder from years passed to now has him beat. Ok he was young? Look at Arnold at 21, lee priest? On levels forever beyond was he attained, yet hes worshipped bc hes an asshole and had a decent physique and low body fat. I've been lifting years, powerlifting and body building but i still don't see anything special about this dude other than the fact he got slight fame. So if his videos and worthless words and "inspirations" live on great. But you dick riders just want a hero bc you in your live at best hope to attain to be a piece of shit pest to society that makes this world a worse place to live in.. And say he lived life the best to the fullest yet needed roids and drugs to even be Ok with himself. The most speaciak thing about him came from a fucking bottle and website, the most special thing about you is a keyboard and aspiration to maybe think you could look like him. But you'll never get off your unamed comments and computer jacking off and live a shit life and actually stop eating shit, get out and hit the weight, care about someone other than you, bc last i checked its not about me or you, like him.. Here today gone tomorrow.. And get off this blog and stfu.

    ReplyDelete
  46. yep people still talking about zyzz...why all the hype? quites simple really...:

he documented his hobby on the internet and went from a skinny kid playing computers 12 hours a day to a brad pitt/ johnny depp level of female admiration.

he was the first to do that successfully and then as he died young he's blown up into an internet legend.

But in reality he has helped 1000's of underconfident computer addicted teenagers think about hitting the gym and despite what idiots think its actually quite hard to get steroids so doubt that many people feel the need to jump on the gear because he put up a video of himself jumping around in his pants.

  51. I agree that self-obsession and vanity can lead one down a path of despair, but so does sitting at home playing video games all day and feeling unworthy of anything. I guess Zyzz is an inspiration to many people because he taught them to live life to the fullest, and unfortunately some vanity was necessary to achieve that end because the rest of humanity is vain as well. I think the truth lies somewhere in between.

  52. Hi Marcus,

Interesting read. Just came along your post.

Zyzz started off at 4chan and the Misc in bodybuilding .com, 2 places full of nerdy-type WoW-playing skinny boys. These same guys are highly impressible, and much of Zyzz's initial fame came through them: they saw Zyzz as the way out of being socially rejected.

In all the videos you see of Zyzz, he is high. The energised, charlatan, cocky and pseudo-alpha male that you see is a male who was loaded on cocaine, clenbuterol and trenbolone. That, plus the fact that he was ballooning up in muscle mass from all the steroids (he never came off of them in 3 years) gave him too-high a confidence, to the point of delusion. I can assure you that if you were on the same cocktail of drugs as him, you'd do the same stupid shit he did on his videos.

Zyzz was not happy with his own self, hence the steroid and hard-drugs abusing. Without the drugs, there'd be no Zyzz. Zyzz was a shy, "beta" skinny phaggot (as he himself claimed) who would not build muscle without the steroids. It was complete delusion from his own self. What's worse is that people believe in this guy, when all his motivational speeches were done under the influence of drugs.

These are some facts about Zyzz, take from here http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=147067253&page=3

    "His videos inspire millions"

More like the same group of several thousands of homosexuals who watched it daily for "inspiration".

"His lifestyle is adopted by people all over the world"

His lifestyle? Taking steroids, drugs, and going to festivals? Millions practice that lifestyle before Zyzz and millions continue to practice it after Zyzz. Why give him credit?

"On August 5th a man that changed our generation"

What? Inspiring some teenagers to go the the gym and or take steroids apparently changed a generation.

    "He never put others down"

Lol? He always put others down. He called his fans phaggots, random people ugly ****s, said nobody would amount to him, and all types of other crap

"that hard work can allow you to change yourself"

Hard work, steroids, clen, stimulants, peptides

"A man that gave us so much"/

If by us he means his friends and by so much he means fame, then true. But he mostly just worked out and attentioned whored. I don't remember him ever going out of his way to help anybody?

    "and asked nothing in return"

He used his fame to sell steroids to make $$$ and was in the process of making a bunch of product to make more $$$

    Take care.

  53. pretty ignorant TBH. zyzz wasnt perfect, but no one is. people who criticise him are so dissatisfied with their own lives that they feel the need to have a go at others. he didnt inspire people to take steroids, he inspired people to get in shape. their methods are their own choice. ive watched a few of his videos and ive never noticed any open advertisement for steroids or any other drugs. just the gym.

grow up, get a life and maybe take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask if you're really happy. zyzz is someone who made a body that he was happy with, and wanted to share that. how is that different to a good singer sharing their talent?

  54. Zyzz was a douchebag! And yeah, his death was a gift to humanity! The last thing this world needs is another douchebag!

  55. Ah I think Aziz was just like any guy at that age, most guys who are early 20's dream of the life he lived .... Just that he went out there and at all costs he achieved it .... In my opinion, taking to account his hereditary cardiac downfall, he wasn't doing much of what other guys wud do at that age ... I just wish he was about 5 years older when he started bodybuilding .... His body and mind wud of been more mature, and the fact that he reached 95 odd kg's shredded at that age? With those aesthetics it could of put him on the olympia stage at about 27 28, and cud of been literally as good as his mentors arnold and frank, inevitably his life and the way he lived, showed us all wat it requires to be motivated and stay true to ur goals, he did show consistency to get that physique at a high level, and in terms of bodybuilding he has earned my respect, in his death we also learn that u can't speed up the natural order of physiology to fast .... It takes time! Good consistent gains that can be maintained without the use of gear takes time! Also another important point from his death is, don't disregard wat ur body is telling u ever! Especially when using any substances medication gear etc, I am actually 28 and bodybuilding for more or less 8 9 years or so, and I never even heard of Aziz till this year, I was always busy looking at Dorian or Ronney or Phil or Kai, and in the end, Aziz is a cud of been, I wish I cud of seen him at peak, definitely wud of had God like status if he thought about longevity, but it saddens me to see a physique of that uniqueness leave the world without even leaving his mark at the highest level, train hard all, listen to ur bodies, consistency and compound movements will make a beast .... N if ur not competing? Don't use juice .... Its not worth the risk, eat well train hard, and I hope we see a godlike structure like Aziz again .....

  56. Great advice about listening to your body. Bodybuilder s and gum junkies are used to pushing against their bodies - Andrea Munzer being the classic case, R.I.P.
